Food safety lawyer Fred Pritzker is calling on Del Monte Fresh Produce N.A., Inc., supplier of cantaloupe to Costco, to immediately pay medical expenses and other costs incurred by victims of the multi-state Salmonella Panama outbreak in Oregon, Washington, California, Maryland and now possibly Idaho.
"The physical, financial and emotional burdens of a Salmonella infection can be a hardship for victims and their families, and I've seen this happen too often in my practice as a Salmonella lawyer," said Attorney Fred Pritzker. "It is only fair that Del Monte pay for hospitalization and other direct costs while related legal issues, including pain and suffering, are pending. The families deserve that peace of mind."
Epidemiological evidence links the Salmonella outbreak to consumption of Del Monte cantaloupe. On March 22, 2011, in response to the outbreak, Del Monte recalled 4,992 cartons of cantaloupes distributed through warehouse clubs in Alaska, California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington.
The illnesses in Idaho have yet to be confirmed, but more than 40 wedding guests became ill in the hours and days following a Boise, Idaho wedding reception where cantaloupe was served. The wedding caterer received a call from Costco warning her that she had purchased a large quantity of possibly-affected cantaloupe, according to news reports.
