Next-Generation Networks to Provide Greater Capacity in Canada, Pyramid Finds

CAMBRIDGE, Mass., March 29, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- LTE deployments planned in coming years will give operators the necessary bandwidth to allow for more mobile data devices on networks, including smartphones, tablets and notebook/netbook connectivity devices, according to a new report from Pyramid Research (www.pyr.com).

Canada: Low Mobile Penetration Presents Big Opportunity for Operators offers a precise profile of the country's telecommunications, media and technology sectors based on proprietary data from Pyramid's research in the market. It provides detailed competitive analysis of both the fixed and mobile sectors, tracks the market shares of technologies and services and monitors the introduction and spread of new technologies.

"With a mobile penetration rate of 72 percent, Canada has a sizable untouched market opportunity compared with other mature markets of its size," Emily Smith, Research Analyst at Pyramid. "At least 9.5 million Canadians go without mobile service. Other than subscriber growth, mobile data is the main opportunity for operators to grow revenue," she adds.

"All three of the major mobile players have reported big gains in mobile data revenue in 2010. Data revenue growth for Bell and Rogers was 41 percent and 32 percent, respectively, and Telus reported mobile data ARPS gains of 27 percent in the fourth quarter year-over-year from 2009," indicates Smith. These gains are due primarily to smartphones, which have had a big impact on the Canadian mobile market. "Rogers activated a record 635,000 smartphones in the fourth quarter of last year, and almost a third were for customers who were new wireless customers," she notes. "Moving forward, continued growth in smartphones and mobile devices, such as eReaders and tablets, will contribute to the growth in data ARPS, reaching nearly 40 percent of total ARPS by 2015," says Smith.

Canadian operators will be concentrating on FTTx and LTE rollouts over the next several years. "LTE deployments planned in coming years will give operators the necessary bandwidth to allow for more mobile data devices on networks, including smartphones, tablets and notebook/netbook connectivity devices," says Smith. "In order to support continued smartphone adoption, Bell will continue upgrading its HSPA network before launching LTE in 2012/2013. Rogers is likely to launch LTE this year ahead of the 700MHz spectrum auction and has been conducting trials with Ericsson Canada," she adds.
