Maryland Summit Ambulatory Surgical Centers' Administrators Named Tops by Becker's ASC Review

BALTIMORE, April 4, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Becker's ASC Review, a trade publication for ambulatory surgery center management that offers general business, legal and clinical guidance, selected two Maryland Summit Ambulatory Surgical Centers (ASC) administrators as tops in the nation. Brad Lerner, M.D., director of the Summit Ambulatory Surgical Centers and chief of urology at Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore, and Stacy Zemencik, RN, director of nursing, were cited for working tirelessly to promote quality outcomes, patient satisfaction, financial profitability and team cohesion at their centers.

Summit Ambulatory Surgical Centers, a part of Chesapeake Urology Associates, operates 14 locations throughout Central Maryland. The centers provide a surgical setting for urologic procedures performed by physicians of Chesapeake Urology physicians, the largest urologic practice in Maryland and the mid-Atlantic region. Locations include: Anne Arundel County in Glen Burnie; Baltimore City at Good Samaritan Hospital, Pine Heights Medical Center at St. Agnes Hospital and Union Memorial Hospital; in Baltimore County at the Ruxton Professional Center , at GBMC and on Sr. Pierre Drive in Towson, in Franklin Square / White Marsh on Hospital Drive, and in two locations at McDonogh Crossroads in Owings Mills; in Carroll County in Westminster; in Harford County in Bel Air and Havre de Grace; and in Howard County in Columbia.

Brad Lerner, M.D., has practiced urology for over 20 years and has served as the clinical director of ASCs for 15 years. In this position for Summit Ambulatory Surgical Centers, he serves as the center's administrative leadership along with Stacy Zemencik, RN, director of nursing. One of the mid-Atlantic's leading urologists, Dr. Lerner was one of the first fertility specialists in Maryland and is regarded as one of the best known and most experienced urologic microsurgeons in the state. He also serves as urologic consultant to the Baltimore Ravens.

Stacy Zemencik, RN, works in close, day-to-day partnership with Dr. Lerner and is responsible for long-term strategic planning, implementation, development and evaluation of ambulatory surgical services. She has served as DON for the center for the past three years, prior to which she held several medical surgical nursing positions over a period of 10 years.

The Summit Ambulatory Surgical Centers opened its first site in 1992 at Union Memorial Hospital. Annually, 36,000 cases are performed at the 14 locations throughout Maryland. Procedures are utilized by Chesapeake Urology's 52 physicians, including urologists, radiation oncologists and auropathologist.

The Summit Ambulatory Surgical Centers are accredited by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care, Inc. Surgeries performed at the 14 centers include Brachytherapy for prostate cancer; Orchiectomy for testicular cancer; Cystoscopy; Prostate Biopsy; Lithotripsy; Circumcision; Minimally invasive treatments for BPH; Vasectomy; Hydrocelectomy; Spermatocelectomy; and Varicoceletomy. Becker's ASC Review named the Summit Ambulatory Surgical Centers a "Great Surgery Center to Work for" earlier this year.
