New Alion Herbicide Receives EPA Registration / Unique pre-emergence herbicide provides longer-lasting residual control on tree nuts and vines, citrus, stone and pome fruits.

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C., April 14, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- New Alion(TM) herbicide from Bayer CropScience LP is now registered by the Environmental Protection Agency for use in tree nuts and vines, citrus, stone and pome fruits.

"The longer-lasting control of Alion is something leading competitive products cannot offer," said Michael Deall, vice president, marketing and portfolio management. "Alion herbicide features a new and unique chemistry that provides extended residual control compared to competitive products. Field trials across the United States during the last eight years confirm the herbicide's outstanding performance and uncompromised crop safety."

Alion enables growers to more effectively rotate modes of action and preserve the utility of weed management technologies. It offers a new single mode of action for control of a wide range of annual grass and broadleaf weeds, including those weeds resistant to glyphosate herbicides, such as marestail and fleabane. Field trials show Alion, applied alone or in combination with other herbicides, can control ACCase-, ALS-, triazine- and glyphosate-resistant weed species. This unique chemistry led the Weed Science Society of America to approve a new herbicide mode of action group specifically for Alion herbicide - WSSA Group 29.

"Alion is an exciting product that will provide long residual control of broadleaf and grassy weeds, particularly of marestail and fleabane," says Kurt Hembree, weed management farm advisor, University of California Cooperative Extension. "In addition, its unique mode of action will be a valuable tool to help manage weed resistance."

When combined with the nonselective activity of Rely(R) 280 herbicide, producers can expect fast-acting burndown from Rely 280 and enhanced residual weed control from Alion.

"Alion applied at five ounces per acre will deliver six months or more of residual weed control," said Pau Yen, Alion product manager, Bayer CropScience. "It offers strong advantages that our field trials continue to reinforce. We're excited to give growers the opportunity to see how well Alion herbicide works in the field at events this summer."

State registrations for Alion are pending. Please talk with your local Bayer CropScience sales representative for more information.
