National Society of Hispanic MBAs Prepares Hispanic Professionals for CIGNA-backed Healthcare Summit

"Hispanic Summit: Improving Healthcare in our Community" to cover healthcare reform, the 'Hispanic perspective' and the impact on technology, access and education

DALLAS, April 15, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Hispanics' access to healthcare needs improving according to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) and its 2010 National Healthcare Disparities Report (http://www.ahrq.gov/qual/nhqrdr10/nhqrdrminority10.htm). The Hispanic population is the second-largest consumer market in the United States with an estimatedgrowth of 58 percent by 2015(*), and AHRQ's findings indicate racial and ethnic minorities often receive poorer quality of care and more barriers when accessing this care.

To address these disparities and lead the change for improvement in Latino healthcare, the National Society of Hispanic MBAs (NSHMBA) and CIGNA organized the "Hispanic Summit: Improving Healthcare in our Community."

Having had a finger on the pulse of the Hispanic community for more than 20 years, NSHMBA was the likely choice for CIGNA, this year's lead sponsor, who approached the organization for assistance with providing a conduit within which to educate the community while simultaneously breaking down healthcare barriers.

"The National Society of Hispanic MBAs is nationally renowned for its impact on higher education and professional development programs in the Hispanic community," said Manny Gonzalez, NSHMBA CEO. "When we recognize needs within the Hispanic community we design programs, resources and opportunities to empower leaders to fill those gaps.

"The Healthcare Summit was created at the behest of our partners, constituents and affiliates who approached us to help them fill a need, the opportunity of which should not only excite healthcare professionals, but punctuate that NSHMBA and others like CIGNA are listening."

The "Hispanic Summit: Improving Healthcare in our Community" is an opportunity for attendees to stay abreast of the latest innovations in healthcare technologies, expand their insight through integration of academic frameworks and share in real-world experiences from the industry experts and business leaders. It is for practitioners and mid- to upper-management including directors, physicians, pharmacist, sales personnel, nurses and analysts to name a few, who will benefit from informative and educational sessions, panel discussions and networking with respected healthcare advocates.

Leading the session "Current Healthcare Trends, Opportunities and Issues" is Dr. Julie vanPutten, Chief Wellness Officer of Florida Hospitals, who agrees the summit is a timely event in light of the latest U.S. healthcare reforms.

"This summit will provide insights into best practices and implementation strategies in lifestyle approaches to health and wellness," vanPutten said. "The innovations readily available when businesses and healthcare intersect represent a new frontier in the provision of sustainable answers to our nation's healthcare crisis.

"Understanding business approaches and current trends in lifestyle medicine and preventive care will be key for employers to contain healthcare costs and ensure a healthy productive workforce, both now and in the future," she said.

The NSHMBA "Hispanic Summit: Improving Healthcare in our Community" will be held in Cleveland, Ohio, May 19-20, 2011 at the Intercontinental Hotel. For more information and to register, visit www.nshmba.org/hispanicsummit. Attendees can take advantage of discounted rates when they register before April 29, receiving an additional $100 off the NSHMBA member price of $350 and non-member price of $500.
