Employees "Dug Deep" to Helpin Tough Times
William A. Hanbury, President & Chief Executive Officer, United Way of the National Capital Area, today presented the award for this region's "Number One Corporate Campaign" to Pepco Holdings, Inc. (PHI) at the company's "Thank You" breakfast for Pepco and PHI campaign workers.
"Those of us who regularly experience Pepco and PHI's commitment to community service appreciate the chance to tell that story," Hanbury said before presenting the award to Joseph M. Rigby,PHI's Chairman, President and CEO. "Last year was full of challenges for our community, for many area companies like Pepco and – of course – for United Way.
"When times are tough, you really value the committed leadership of corporate citizens like Joe Rigby, who serves on our Board of Directors and is Chair of its Treasury and Finance Committee, and Debbi Jarvis, PHI's Vice President of Corporate Citizenship and Social Responsibility and our Board's Resource Development Campaign Chair. Joe and Debbi both have been active for many years in supporting United Way campaigns and we are fortunate that our region is the beneficiary of their continued commitment."
"This is not just about our company," Rigby said. "It's about our employees, from Washington, D.C. to Atlantic City, N.J. And I'm proud to accept this award on their behalf, because it's their hard work and generosity that allowed us to meet our campaign goals last year. Economic conditions made it a hard year for everyone, including employees and communities in all our service territories. But our dedicated volunteers ran a great campaign, and employees dug deep to honor our long tradition of giving back to the communities where we live and work."
PHI's United Way Campaign – which supports United Ways and community service organizations in the Atlantic City Electric (NJ), Delmarva Power (DE & MD) and Pepco (DC & MD) service territories – raised nearly $1.1 million in 2010. Contributing to this total were monies raised by employees' personal contributions, "special event" fundraisers, like Pepco's annual Talent Show, and a 50 percent corporate match funded by contributions from PHI shareholders.
