Then, at 3pm, PIFA gets a classical focus with the world premiere of HOPE: An Oratorio -- a special commission for PIFA by one of America's most exciting young composers, Jonathan Leshnoff, with conductor Roberto Minczuk, The Mendelssohn Club of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Girlchoir, and soloists including mezzo-soprano Leah Dexter. | |||
Leshnoff's works have been performed in front of a live audience by the Philadelphia, Baltimore, IRIS, Buffalo, Kyoto, Curtis Institute, Kansas City, National Gallery of Art, Boca Raton, Columbus, and Extremadura (Madrid) Orchestras. The first of three recordings devoted exclusively to Leshnoff's music was released on the Naxos "American Classics" label and selected among Naxos's top 40 CDs for 2009. It includes his Violin Concerto, performed by violinist Charles Wetherbee and the Baltimore Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Markand Thakar, and his String Quartet No. 1, performed by the Carpe Diem String Quartet. Other Naxos releases feature his Symphony No. 1 conducted by Michael Stern and the IRIS Chamber Orchestra, and Leshnoff's chamber music. PIFA -- the first ever Philadelphia International Festival of the Arts, inspired by the Kimmel Center, (April 7- May 1), brings the City of Lights to Philadelphia with 145 partner organizations, 135 events, 1500 artists over 25 days, celebrating Philadelphia's vibrant and diverse arts and culture community with the creativity, innovation and collaboration that echoes the prolific artistry of Paris 1910 - 1920. Oratorio is one of over 30 specially-commissioned works for PIFA.
