Capitol Hill Spotlight Turns to Science on May 11

Media are invited to an exhibition and reception featuring innovative NSF-funded research projects.

WASHINGTON, April 26, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Fascinating advances across the spectrum of science and engineering will be displayed and explained by experts at the Coalition for National Science Funding's (CNSF) 17th Annual Exhibition and Reception. The event, "STEM Research and Education: Underpinning American Innovation," will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on May 11, in Rooms B338-340 of the Rayburn House Office Building in Washington, DC.

Highlighting 36 innovative research and education projects supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF), the CNSF Exhibition and Reception is a much-anticipated event that annually draws more than 350 attendees including members of Congress and their staff, congressional committee staff, the leadership of NSF, and representatives from the White House and other policymaking and research agencies.

Research presentations will highlight a wide range of exciting science, including topics such as:

  • Energy: How nanotechnology can enhance energy efficiency; fuel from biomass.
  • Medicine: Handheld diagnostics.
  • Environment: The Deepwater Horizon spill from pipe to plume; impact of past abrupt climate change; microbial solutions; math and the melting polar ice cap.
  • Education: Insights from neuroscience on development of mathematical reasoning; creating the next generation of STEM innovators; innovative computer science teaching and learning.
  • Society: A virtual laboratory studies social and economic interactions; population data for policy analysis; managing trust in emerging systems.
