CPTA Takes a Step Toward Improving Patient Access to Physical Therapy Services

SACRAMENTO, Calif., May 3, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- "California physical therapists are delighted the members of the California Senate Business, Professions and Economic Development Committee see the importance of Senate Bill 924 and its value to consumers.

"SB 924, sponsored by the California Physical Therapy Association, will improve the health care process for millions of Californians who have had to endure delays and unnecessary costs because they have been unable to access timely physical therapy treatment.

"Currently, patients seeking rehabilitation for functional impairments due to advanced age, disease, workplace accidents or sports injuries have been denied direct access to treatment by the physical therapist of their choice unless they obtain a physician's diagnosis first. This results in duplicative visits to physician offices for the same condition that a physical therapist is uniquely and highly qualified to treat. SB 924 will correct this flaw in the health care delivery system.

"Physical therapists are experts in human function and mobility and are required to undergo rigorous education and clinical training to examine, evaluate, classify impairments for and treat patients. However, physical therapists who hold these credentials are restricted from using their skills unless they move out of California. California is literally surrounded by states where the public has access to immediate treatment by a physical therapist.

"SB 924 is a safe and common-sense approach to improving health care delivery while saving costs. California consumers who care about their health and fitness are urged to call their legislators and Governor Brown to support the passage of this significant legislation."
