Profile America -- Saturday, May 7th. Tomorrow marks the birthday of a man who was important in making golf popular in the U.S. Francis Ouimet began his golfing career as a caddy. Then in 1913, at the age of 20, he generated national enthusiasm for the game by becoming the first American -- and the first amateur -- to win the U.S. Open Golf Championship. Ouimet went on to win the U.S. Amateur Championship twice and was a member of the U.S. Walker Cup team for 27 years. He also had the distinction of being the first American elected captain of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of Saint Andrews in Scotland. Fifty years ago, there were 5 million golfers in the U.S. -- today that number is nearly 26 million.
