Cedar Point's Math and Science Week Returns: Bigger and Better Than Ever!

SANDUSKY, Ohio, May 14, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Weather presentations, science missions and thrill rides made from K'NEX Brand pieces are just some of the special activities planned for this year's Math and Science Week at Cedar Point amusement park/resort in Sandusky, Ohio.

School groups from around the Midwest will be visiting the 364-acre park located on the shores of Lake Erie to participate in the educational programs and activities geared toward K-12 grade students. The five-day event will be held Monday through Friday, May 16-20 at the newly designated Math and Science Week Learning Zone located in front of the Good Time Theatre.

Educational partners participating in the event will be Cleveland's NASA's Glenn Research Center and Plum Brook Station, COSI (Center of Science and Industry) of Columbus, the Detroit Science Center, the Imagination Station, Toledo, and K'NEX Brands, L.P.

This year's event will include weather presentations. Students can learn more about how the weather plays an important part of their daily lives. Conducting the weather presentations will be Cleveland's Betsy Kling of WKYC-TV 3, Fox Toledo's Doug Moats, Ohio News Network's Mark Taylor and Jim Geyer of WLNS-TV 6, Lansing.

NASA, COSI of Columbus and K'NEX Brands will be presenting displays such as Space Science exhibits, microgravity demonstrations and amusement park ride models constructed entirely of K'NEX pieces all week long. Tuesday through Thursday, May 17-19, the Detroit Science Center will add additional displays and exhibits to the event, while the Imagination Station will be at the park Wednesday through Friday, May 18-20.

Cedar Point partnered with K'NEX Brands in January, challenging school groups nationwide to design and build the ultimate amusement park ride model in the Cedar Point K'NEX Great Thrill Ride Build-Off. Schools from across the country entered the contest and five schools representing three states were selected to showcase their winning thrill rides. The top five ride-building schools were Marshall Middle School (Wexford, Pa.), Glenfield Middle School (Montclair, N.J.), St. Raphael Catholic School (Bay Village, Ohio), Bellevue High School (Bellevue, Ohio), and Fairbanks Local Schools (Milford Center, Ohio).

In addition to the exhibits and special activities, many students will be given class assignments to complete work sheets that illustrate the speed, velocity, and acceleration of Cedar Point's rides and roller coasters.
