Summer Registration Fee Waived for New Families
Kumon, the world's largest after-school math and reading enrichment program opened a new center in Newark at 902 N. 5th Street (Franklin Avenue and Heller Parkway at Branch Brook Park Light Rail Station). To celebrate the Grand Opening, Kumon of Branch Brook is waiving the registration fee for families who enroll this summer between June 1st and July 15th.
As parents consider summer activities for their children, Kumon gives children the daily practice needed to catch-up and stay-ahead during the break. According to a Duke University study, most students lose about two months of grade level equivalency in math computation skills during the summer months which add up to nearly two years of lost learning during the child's academic career.
"Our goal is to help each child develop a strong sense of self-confidence. We want students to experience the success in life that can result from academic achievement," said Kumon Instructor, Maritza Gonzalez.
In a recent report, "Teaching Math to the Talented," published in Education Next, American students were significantly outperformed by 33 countries including Taiwan, Hong Kong, South Korea, and Finland. America's lack of advanced students impacts the country's future economic growth and that's why Kumon Instructors of Branch Brook, MiChelle Carpenter and Maritza Gonzalez care deeply about helping Newark students in their after-school enrichment program. Nationwide more than half of U.S. Kumon students study advanced math, and 24 percent of these students are learning materials two to three years above their school grade level.
As experienced educators, Ms. Carpenter and Ms. Gonzalez have witnessed the adversities endured by students who are motivated to learn in challenging environments. Ms. Carpenter has a bachelor's degree from Drexel University, and prior to Kumon, taught mathematics and science for 15 years. Ms. Gonzalez has a bachelor's degree from Montclair State University, and for the past six years has been managing the Supplemental Education Service (SES) program in Newark. They are both very passionate about helping students achieve their full potential and believe that Kumon's presence in the community will be a direct benefit to these students and their families.
Kumon aims to unlock the potential of children so they can achieve more on their own. Through daily practice and mastery of materials, students increase confidence, improve concentration and develop better study and test taking skills. Founded in Japan in 1958, the learning method uses an individualized approach that helps children develop a solid command of math and reading comprehension skills.
Kumon of Branch Brook class hours are: Mondays and Thursdays from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m. Students study for approximately one half-hour per subject and have short assignments to complete at home.
