Arizona Virtual Academy Celebrates the Graduation of Class of 2011

Virtual students plan to attend top colleges and universities across the country

MESA, Ariz., May 23, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Arizona Virtual Academy is honored to celebrate the graduation of 95 students as the Class of 2011, the schools largest graduating class to date.

The traditional graduation ceremony took place on May 20 at 6 p.m. at the East Valley Institute of Technology (EVIT).

This year's keynote speaker was Arizona House of Representatives member Steve Court, who has served on the Education and Appropriations committees for 3 years, and was Chairman of the Higher Education, Innovation and Reform committee during this past legislative session. Representative Court was recently elected by the Republicans in the House of Representatives to serve as the Majority Leader.

The ceremony also featured the Valedictorian speech by AZVA graduate Lauren Maxwell. Upon graduation, Lauren plans to attend Arizona State University to study Communications. She was awarded an Arizona Instrument to Measure Standards (AIMS) scholarship to assist with her college tuition. AIMS scholarships are available to students who exceed standards in reading, writing, and math, possess a cumulative GPA of at least 3.5, and plan to attend any of the three public state universities.

K12, the nation's largest provider of online school programs for students in kindergarten through high school, provides its high quality curriculum and school services to the Arizona Virtual Academy.

"On behalf of the Arizona Virtual Academy teachers and staff, congratulations to our 2011 graduating senior class," said Megan Henry, Head of School at AZVA. "I am extremely eager to see how these talented and intelligent individuals will put their educations to use and excel in the future. No matter what career path they choose, I know AZVA has prepared them to be the well-rounded, leaders of tomorrow."

Some of the schools chosen by this year's graduating class include:

  • Brigham Young University - Idaho
  • Arizona State University
  • Northern Arizona University
  • University of Arizona
  • Cochise College
  • University of Washington

AZVA is a tuition-free, statewide public virtual school program authorized by the State of Arizona. At AZVA, students are able to receive a complete, high quality education at home, on the road, or wherever an Internet connection can be found.

Students who enroll in AZVA receive the award-winning academic program developed by K12 Inc., the nation's largest provider of K-12 online school programs. The K12 curriculum includes engaging web-based lessons along with instructional materials - books, videos, CDs, and other hands-on tools and resources - which are shipped directly to each student's home. AZVA employs state-certified teachers who provide instruction, guidance and support, and regularly interact with students and parents via email, web-based classrooms, online discussions, phone, and face-to-face meetings. Teachers also organize numerous field trips and school activities.
