Department of Justice to Host 2011 National Pretrial Justice Symposium in Washington, D.C.

The Department of Justice's Office of Justice Programs (OJP) in partnership with the nonprofit Pretrial Justice Institute will convene the 2011 National Symposium on Pretrial Justice in Washington, D.C., on TUESDAY, MAY 31 - WEDNESDAY, JUNE 1, 2011.

Leaders from criminal justice stakeholder organizations and the pretrial community will continue a conversation about pretrial release and diversion practices that was started at the 1964 National Conference on Bail and Criminal Justice when Robert F. Kennedy was Attorney General. The conference will explore how evidence-based tools and other reforms can make the pretrial justice system more efficient and cost-effective and make communities safer.

Attorney General Eric H. Holder, Jr., Deputy Attorney General James Cole, Assistant Attorney General Laurie O. Robinson, U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Ronald C. Machen, Jr., Assistant Attorney General Ronald Weich, and OJP's Bureau of Justice Assistance Acting Director James H. Burch II will deliver remarks during the two-day conference.

A complete conference agenda is available at www.pretrial.org/symposium.html. All events are open to the media and will take place at the Renaissance Downtown Hotel, 999 Ninth Street, N.W., Washington, D.C.
