The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation Celebrates Dedication of Permanent Baltimore Homeless Shelter

$1.8 million grant will support 24-hour, year-round emergency shelter serving 275 homeless men and women

BALTIMORE, June 23, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation, one of the largest private foundations in the United States, today joined in the dedication of the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Housing and Resource Center (The Center) at 620 Fallsway in Baltimore. Operated by Jobs, Housing, Recovery, Inc. with funding from Baltimore City, The Center will provide temporary housing, meals, and showers in addition to a range of services designed to facilitate the rapid transition into self-support and permanent housing.

The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation has committed a $1.8 million capital grant to this project. The building will also serve as the administrative headquarters for the City's Office of Homeless Programs and will be Silver LEED certified.

"This grant reflects the Weinberg Foundation's belief that Baltimore needs a permanent emergency shelter for the City's homeless," said Donn Weinberg, Foundation Chairman of the Board. "Just as individuals need housing in order to stabilize their lives, Baltimore needs The Center to begin reforming its homeless services continuum of care. This Center will be a central gateway to homeless services that will connect individuals quickly and efficiently with stable housing, employment assistance, treatment options, or whatever resource is most appropriate."

Of the 275 beds in the new facility, 25 will be designated for convalescent care of individuals who are discharged from the hospital and require nursing services.
