LOS ANGELES, June 28, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- The formal groundbreaking, held June 21, for the $456 million, 383,000 square foot Scripps Cardiovascular Institute in La Jolla, California is an important milestone for the HOK Los Angeles (HOK/LA) design team that has been working for over 40 months to develop what Scripps is calling an "unparalleled" facility. Close collaboration with the administrators, facilities, design and construction, and clinicians at Scripps has resulted in a design that incorporates advanced thinking in patient-centered care while supporting and consolidating the recognized programs of progressive cardiovascular care of Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla and Scripps Clinic/Scripps Green Hospital.

"From the earliest meetings with the staff we have enjoyed the full participation of an extraordinary team," says Alicia Wachtel, HOK's design team leader. " Working with such dedicated and knowledgeable healthcare professionals, enabled us to create a healthcare facility that will truly deliver on their vision of clinical excellence and patient care."
"We are pleased to partner with HOK, an acknowledged industry leader, to build an innovative, patient-centric facility that reflects the most advanced health care design principles," said Chris Van Gorder, President and CEO of Scripps Health.
The seven-story tower is the first step of a strategy that will replace the existing hospital with what promises to be the most comprehensive medical campus in the San Diego region. Among the distinctive features of the 168-bed Cardiovascular Institute are four state-of-the-art cardiovascular operating rooms, two hybrid operating rooms, four cardiac catheterization and electrophysiology labs connected to centralized research labs, and a center for graduate medical education.
"It's the super integration of form and function, " comments HOK's Jeff Dreesman medical planner. "While innovative thinking can be observed throughout the new facility, the design of the nursing units in both the acute care and ICUs provides nurses with improved proximity to patients as well greater flexibility
The same attention to integration is visible in the site planning and architecture of the tower. "Respectful of the traditional design the existing campus, we used four materials -brick, glass, steel and metal panel -to create direct readable forms," notes Ernest Cirangle, design director.
The new Scripps Cardiovascular Institute is scheduled to open for patient care in 2015.
