Trilogy Behavioral Healthcare, Heartland International Health Center, and Rush University College of Nursing Collaborate on New Community Integrated Care for persons with Serious Mental Illness
CHICAGO, July 1, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- U.S. Rep. Jan Schakowsky and Dr. Bechara Choucair, Commissioner, Chicago Department of Public Health, were special guests at a tour of the new Trilogy Heartland Integrated Healthcare Clinic located at 1400 W. Greenleaf on Wednesday, June 29, 2011.
In 2010, Trilogy was one of 45 mental health organizations across the United States that was awarded a competitive multimillion dollar four-year federal grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). This funding allowed Trilogy to significantly expand its Integrated Healthcare Services by contracting two part-time Heartland International Health Center (HIHC) primary care physicians to provide primary care services at the clinic and further reduce barriers to quality primary healthcare for individuals with serious mental illness. Trilogy developed a partnership with Rush University College of Nursing that enabled Trilogy to act as a clinical practicum site for students in various graduate nursing programs. This aspect of the clinic plays a key role in expanding the capacity to provide affordable healthcare to our underserved client populations.
This new model, treating persons with mental illness in the community-using a holistic approach to addressing all of their medical needs-has been widely embraced by the mental health community and advocates. It is the model that best serves the client and the community in order to help reduce barriers to primary health care and improve overall quality of life.
