SATURDAY, JULY 2: NATIONAL CHERRY FESTIVAL
Profile America - Saturday, July 2nd. Washington, D.C.'s cherry blossoms may be more famous, but beginning today for a week in Traverse City, Michigan, a half-million people will flock to the shores of Lake Michigan for a different kind of celebration - the National Cherry Festival, first held in 1926. They'll be treated to air shows, parades, concerts and sporting events - but the star of the show will be delicious goodies made out of cherries, ranging from pies to ice cream to jam. There are two main types of cherries - sweet for eating right off the tree and tart for baking. Michigan is the leading producer of tart cherries. In the U.S., 160,000 tons of these cherries are harvested each year. You can find these and more facts about America from the U.S. Census Bureau, online at www.census.gov.
