Bob's Red Mill Invites Oatmeal Lovers to "Spar for the Spurtle"

PORTLAND, Ore., July 12, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Think that you can dish up the world's best bowl of oatmeal? Bob's Red Mill Natural Foods wants to find out.

The company recently announced its "Spar for the Spurtle" Recipe Contest, which invites home cooks and professional chefs to submit videos demonstrating a recipe that uses Bob's Red Mill's Steel Cut Oats®. The videos will be posted on www.SparForTheSpurtle.com where fans can vote for their favorites. The top three contestants will be the finalists who will be flown to Portland to compete in the live cook-off for a panel of celebrity judges in conditions that mirror those of the Golden Spurtle competition. The winner will receive an all-expenses-paid trip to Scotland and $2,500 to compete in the 18th Annual Golden Spurtle World Porridge Making Championship!

The Golden Spurtle Competition is held annually in Carrbridge Inverness Shire in Scotland. Bob's Red Mill was the first American team to compete in the championship in 2009. That year, they won the coveted Golden Spurtle and title of the World's Best Oats. Now, the company is turning to its fans to claim its first title in the Specialty Section at the championship.

To enter the contest, visit www.SparForTheSpurtle.com to submit a three-minute video of an original recipe-sweet or savory-that uses the Steel Cut Oats. Recipes should be made within 30 minutes and demonstrate creative use of the oats. The deadline to enter is July 30, 2011.

"We are honored to have won the title of World's Best Oats at the 2009 Golden Spurtle competition," said Bob Moore, founder of employee-owned Bob's Red Mill. "Now we're looking to our fans to show just how creative people can be when they set out to cook whole grains for every meal of the day."
