Set to Deliver 20,000 Petitions to Members of Congress, Letting them Know Seniors are Not Pushovers in Debt Debate & Don't Cut Earned Benefits
What: As the debate over paying the nation's bills reaches a fevered pitch and cuts to Social Security and Medicare benefits are being considered, AARP members are set to deliver a strong message to Congress: "Seniors are not pushovers - Hands off Social Security and Medicare." AARP Idaho members will join state leaders tomorrow for a press conference to drive the point home, discussing what's at stake in Idaho and calling on Congress to take the programs off the table in the debt debate; unveiling 20,000 petitions from concerned Idahoans the group will deliver to Members of Congress' district offices tomorrow.
Who: AARP Idaho Volunteers and State Leaders
When: Thursday, July 21, 10 A.M.
Where: AARP Idaho State Office
3080 E. Gentry Way, Suite 100
Meridian, ID
Why: As the deadline for reaching the nation's debt limit quickly approaches, and Congress hotly debates how to pay the nation's bills and reduce the deficit, cuts to Social Security and Medicare benefits are being considered. Any cuts to the programs would hit hundreds of thousands of Idahoans who've paid into the systems and earned the benefits. AARP stands in strong opposition of any cuts to Social Security and Medicare benefits as part of deficit reduction and has launched a national campaign to oppose the cuts: Protect Seniors, www.aarp.org/protectseniors. Across the nation this week, AARP members will be delivering millions of petitions urging Congress to oppose cuts to Social Security and Medicare benefits.
