Profile America - Sunday, July 24th. With increasing attention being paid to next year's elections, Americans are hearing more and more about opinion polls on their latest preferences. The first such poll in U.S. history appeared on this date in 1824 in the Harrisburg Pennsylvanian. According to those surveyed by the newspaper, Andrew Jackson was greatly favored over John Quincy Adams in the four-man presidential race. Though Jackson won the most popular and electoral college votes, he had a majority in neither and the House of Representatives then elected Adams president. In the election of 2008, more than 131 million voters -- 57 percent of those eligible -- went to the polls to cast presidential ballots.
