These are tough times to be a mayor. California's economic slump has forced many local governments to make Draconian budget cuts and lay off workers while still managing the everyday challenges of public safety, education and much more. Few mayors know these difficulties more intimately than Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, the chief executive of the nation's second largest city as well as the newly minted president of the U.S. Conference of Mayors.
Please join us for lunch on Tuesday, Aug. 16 as the Sacramento Press Club proudly welcomes Mayor Villaraigosa, who will discuss the challenges and opportunities facing local governments in today's highly volatile economic climate. This includes his recently noted desire to lead an effort to reform California's seminal Proposition 13, the so-called "third rail" of Golden State politics.
One of the most high-profile Latino politicians in the United States, Mayor Villaraigosa is a former Speaker of the California State Assembly and is often mentioned as a possible gubernatorial or U.S. Senate candidate. He is currently serving his second term as mayor.
