DALLAS, Aug. 10, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- It's a three-peat! Nigel Richards, 44, a New Zealand security analyst who lives in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, has won the 2011 National SCRABBLE® Championship in Dallas, Texas. With this victory he becomes only the 2nd three-time winner of the 30 year old competition, tying New York expert Joe Edley. Richards, also a World SCRABBLE® Champion, won $10,000 and bragging rights among the world's 25,000 SCRABBLE® tournament players, finishing 22-9 with a +1532 point spread. Among the winning words played were FICE (a small dog of mixed breed), TUQUE (a knitted woolen cap) and OURIE (shivering with cold).

Kenji Matsumoto, 26, from Aiea, HI, came in second with a win loss record of 22-9 and a +1186 point spread. This was Kenji's 8th Nationals since 2000. In third place was Brian Bowman from Villa Hills, KY, who also finished 22-9 with a +1028 spread. This was only Brian's 2nd Nationals since starting to play competitively in 2006.
Nearly 350 word wizards from 40 states and 4 countries played 31 rounds of SCRABBLE over five days at the Hotel InterContinental Dallas. Competitors ranged from ages 12-81.
