SUNDAY, AUGUST 14: LONGEST SOFTBALL GAME
Profile America - Sunday, August 14th. Many of us have played softball at one time or another but how about a game with the score of 491 to 467? The event was one of the world's longest softball games, finally called in the 365th inning because of rain. This epic slugfest took place in Montecello, New York, between teams from Gager's Diner and the Bend 'n Elbow Tavern. It started at 10 in the morning on August 14, 1976 and ended the next day at 4 p.m. Seventy players took part, with Gager's Diner the winner. The idea was to raise money both for a local hospital and for a new baseball field. More than 12.5 million Americans play softball each year.
