August 23, 2011 - Following this afternoon's earthquake that was felt up and down the east coast, Covanta is reporting that its Energy-from-Waste facilities have remained online and unaffected. Energy-from-Waste (EfW) facilities supply a reliable, renewable source of baseload electricity and get their fuel -- municipal solid waste -- from the communities to which they provide electricity. In contrast to other renewable energy sources like wind and solar, EfW facilities operate 24/7 and are an extremely reliable and safe way to produce electricity.
In addition to creating much needed renewable and reliable energy, recovering energy from waste after efforts to reduce, reuse and recycle have been imposed, is a critical component of managing our residual waste. For every ton of municipal solid waste processed at Energy-from-Waste facilities like Covanta Alexandria/Arlington, greenhouse gas emissions are reduced by the equivalent of approximately one ton less of carbon dioxide emissions. This is possible due to the avoidance of methane from landfills, the offset of greenhouse gases from fossil fuel electrical production, and the recovery of metals for recycling.
