SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 3: SHRIMP & PETROLEUM FESTIVAL
Profile America -- Saturday, September 3rd. One of the more unusually named events is currently under way in Morgan City, Louisiana -- the Louisiana Shrimp and Petroleum Festival. Some 150,000 people will have attended by the time it closes on Monday. The festival honors the working men and women of two industries important to the state's economy -- seafood and petroleum. Not only will visitors eat shrimp but they will be treated to other foods, arts and crafts, entertainment and water and land parades. Recently, natural and man-made disasters have hit both industries hard. In terms of shrimp, the annual catch was more than 332 million pounds in 2000 - by 2008, it had dropped to nearly 257 million pounds. Profile America is in its 15th year as a public service of the U.S. Census Bureau.
