Dear HNBA Members:
I am pleased to submit to you, our members, this annual report, which is comprised of a review of the great accomplishments we have had this year working together as a national organization.
Together, we have continued to actively advance the HNBA's mission of serving as the national voice of the Hispanic legal community through legislative and legal advocacy, the promotion of more Hispanic judges and executive appointments, an expansion of our programs, committees and membership benefits, enhancement of communications and collaboration with other bar associations, law students, public officials, judges, community leaders, the business community, and the press. We have nearly doubled our membership this year, and have welcomed several new affiliates to the HNBA family including, the Hispanic Bar Association of Central Florida, the Tampa Bay Hispanic Bar Association, and the Hispanic Ontario Lawyer Association.
Our Annual Convention in Dallas from August 31 to September 3 is the spectacular culmination of a very rewarding year for me as your national president. The Dallas Hispanic Bar Association worked tirelessly over the past two years to organize and produce an incredible and memorable gathering of some of the brightest minds in America.
One of my important roles as National President is to spread the message and reputation of the HNBA through interaction with public officials, judges, bar, community and business leaders, the press, among others. These interactions help the HNBA remain visible and help forge the relationships required to keep us moving forward. Since I've become HNBA President, we had over a hundred outreach events throughout the country.
Along with working with the DHBA leadership this past year, I thoroughly enjoyed working with other exceptional leaders as I visited every region and most of our affiliates in over 25 states. This year, we continued to expand partnerships to benefit HNBA members and the Hispanic community at large through our work with the National Hispanic Leadership Agenda, LatinaStyle Inc., the American Bar Association (ABA) and American Corporate Counsel, among others and all while we launched a nationwide mentoring program, Street Law en Espanol, the Big Brother Big Sister program, advanced civil rights, human rights, including voting rights, women's rights, LGBT rights and advocated on "The Hill" and with The White House.
This past year, some of our accomplishments and events include the Special Swearing-In Ceremony with Justice Sotomayor, the HNBA Latina Commission Public Interest Executive Leadership Program, the HNBA Pro Bono Challenge, Legislative Day, World Justice Project, Dream Act Advocacy, and Comprehensive Immigration Reform Report, among other achievements.
