Profile America - Wednesday, September 7th. Boxing in the U.S. moved into the modern era on this date in 1892 in New Orleans, when legendary fighters John L. Sullivan and James J. Corbett fought the first match held under the Marquis of Queensbury Rules. Sullivan was knocked out in the 21st round. And in September 1927, half the country heard on radio one of the most famous boxing matches of all time. In a heavyweight championship match between Jack Dempsey and Gene Tunney. Dempsey downed Tunney, but failed to move immediately to a corner, delaying the referee's count. Tunney recovered and went on to win the match on a decision.
