Transmode: upc cablecom selects Transmode's Switched Video Transport solution

Stockholm, Sweden and Comptel Plus, Orlando, Florida - 4th October 2011 - Transmode, a global supplier of packet optical networking solutions, today announced the first deployment for its new Switched Video Transport solution, which will be installed in the new national network of leading Swiss cable TV operator upc cablecom.

upc cablecom, the largest broadband cable operator in Switzerland and part of Liberty Global Europe's UPC Broadband division, chose Transmode's recently-launched Switched Video Transport (http://www.transmode.com/press-releases/transmode-launches-switched-video-transport-solution-to-optimize-multicast-video-distribution) because of its ability to optimize multicast traffic to cope with explosion in traffic generated by the migration to High Definition TV.

Karl Thedéen Transmode's CEO, commented, "We are very pleased to provide upc cablecom with this flexible solution to their diverse broadcast needs which specifically supports their rapid migration to High Definition TV services. This installation emphasizes that Transmode's Switched Video Transport solution is a preferable alternative to traditional routers for multicast distribution of high volume TV traffic and opens up new business opportunities for Transmode."

The new network, due for completion in Q4 2011, will be based on four interlocking rings, covering all regions of Switzerland. It serves at least 2.1 million households, as well as approximately 240 smaller broadband cable operators.

The network is based on a sophisticated underlying ROADM-based optical layer, which supports a wide range of capabilities such as: broadcast services, broadband services and additional services such as mobile backhaul and business Ethernet.

Alexander Lorenz, upc cablecom's Vice President Network Services, said, "Before choosing Transmode's solution, we considered an alternative network model based on distributed IP routers. However, we realized this would mean higher costs and complexity as well as higher latency and jitter, which would be undesirable for TV transmissions. Transmode's Switched Video Transport solution not only meets our current plans but allows us great flexibility as our business continues to grow."

Switched Video Transport demonstrates the benefits of the applications-focused approach Transmode is taking with the Native Packet Optical (http://www.transmode.com/technologies/native-packet-optical) solution to Layer 1 and 2 consolidation. This architecture enables Transmode to focus on providing a range of high-end solutions for Transport Ethernet in applications such as Business Ethernet Services, Mobile Backhaul and now Switched Video Transport.
