WASHINGTON, Oct. 11, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Department of the Navy (DoN) will hold the annual Secretary of the Navy (SECNAV) Energy and Water Management Awards Ceremony featuring a keynote address by the Under Secretary of the Navy Robert Work. This ceremony is hosted by the Naval Facilities Engineering Command.
What: The SECNAV Awards honor men and women of the Navy and Marine Corps for exemplary achievement in energy and water efficiency, and use of renewable energy sources. These accomplishments directly contribute to increased energy security, conserving precious and vulnerable natural resources, curbing greenhouse gas emissions, and reducing America's dependence on fossil fuels.
The Secretary of the Navy will recognize:
- Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center Twentynine Palms, Calif.
- Marine Corps Logistics Base Albany, Ga.
- Naval Air Station Jacksonville, Fla.
- Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, Kittery, Maine
- Naval Support Activity Souda Bay, Crete, Greece
- USS Bataan (LHD 5)
- USS Hopper (DDG 70)
When: Wednesday, Oct. 12, 2011. The ceremony's schedule is as follows:
- 10:00 a.m. Welcome Reception & Coffee
- 11:00 a.m. Introductions, Special Keynote Address & Awards Presentation
- 12:15 p.m. Adjourn for Luncheon
Where: The U.S. Navy Memorial & Naval Heritage Center, 701 Pennsylvania Ave., NW, Washington, D.C., 20004.
Why: The Secretary of the Navy has outlined five energy goals: Energy Efficient Acquisition: Evaluation of energy factors will be mandatory when awarding contracts for systems and buildings; Sail the "Great Green Fleet": DoN will demonstrate a Green Strike Group in local operations by 2012 and sail it by 2016; Reduce Non-Tactical Petroleum Use: By 2015, DoN will reduce petroleum use in the commercial vehicle fleet by 50 percent; Energy Ashore: By 2020, DoN will produce at least 50 percent of shore-based energy requirements from alternative sources; 50 percent of DoN installations will be net-zero; and Increase Alternative Energy Use DoN-Wide: By 2020, 50 % of total DoN energy consumption will come from alternative sources.
