WARMINSTER, Pa., Oct. 13, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Frederick Pirkle, founder of Therm-Omega-Tech, will be honored with the Sam Houston State Distinguished Alumni Award. The Distinguished Alumni Award is the highest honor the University can bestow upon alumni. Mr. Pirkle is being honored for his personal and professional achievements and for bringing recognition to the University.

Fred Pirkle earned a Bachelor of Science in industrial arts in 1970 and Masters of Arts in industrial technology from Sam Houston State. For a short time afterwards, Mr. Pirkle taught in the Cypress Fairbanks Independent School District in Houston. Following his tenure at Cypress Fairbanks, Fred left to work as a sales engineer for Commercial Industries Division and later Eggelhof, Inc. At Eggelhof, he was assigned to Ogontz Controls in Philadelphia.
Realizing the future in energy conservation, Pirkle left Ogontz Controls and founded Therm-Omega-Tech Inc. in 1982 to manufacture valves of his own patented design. The company grew to be a leader in the field of manufacturing temperature control valves and devices, gaining worldwide respect across diverse industries.
Since 1982, Pirkle has patented more than 20 products, including the first temperature control device for charcoal grills/cookers, the BBQ Guru. Fred's love of barbeque is unequivocal.
