Embassy of the Republic of the Sudan: Malawi Welcomes President Bashir: Africa Yet Again Refuses to Politicize Justice

WASHINGTON, Oct. 15, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- President Bashir arrived in Malawi on Thursday to attend the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) trade talks, and not so surprisingly his presence has the usual anti-Sudan rhetoric flaring. The same misguided parties infamous for their aggression towards Sudan, in their typical fashion, are condemning and even calling for punitive measures against the host nation for extending an invitation to the President to take part in discussions so vital for the economic development and prosperity of Africans.

Malawi's courageous stand and refusal to bend to the absurd pressure is exemplary and deserving of applause. Africans and the world are disillusioned and fully understand that this so-called ICC is no more than a political tool crafted and employed to pacify only the Africans. Perhaps a more logical campaign for the anti-Sudan group to launch would be one that seeks to make the U.S. signatory to the ICC. For indeed these calls on Malawi are outrageous and motivated only by an irrational hostility towards Sudan, one manifested in the false propaganda and defamation campaign that precedes the crisis in Darfur and continues to this day with the crises in South Kordufan and Blue Nile States, two regions where insecurity perpetrated by the very friends of those who today call for Malawi's punishment threatens civilians.

The facts are there for all to see and they reflect nothing close to what's recounted in those farcical and one-sided hearings where misinformed congressmen debrief biased activists about subjects they have little knowledge on. The current problem in South Kordufan and Blue Nile States was initiated by the very friends of some of the congressman who took part in the latest hearings. It was the presence of the SPLM militia in those regions that jeopardized security and continues to threaten lives of innocent civilians. These are bandits that were supposed to have been disarmed and integrated into the armed forces immediately after the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) in 2005. But typical of SPLM, they've refused to comply with the terms of that agreement and many subsequent others that aimed at the peaceful resolution of matters important to the security of both countries. There's no justification for a Southern Sudan military presence or armed group in North Sudan. This constitutes a fundamental infringement on the sovereignty of the latter.

The militias have now instead formed a coalition with other groups in Darfur proclaiming "regime change" as their sole mission, an agenda that spells nothing short of a catastrophe for the innocent Sudanese. It would be far more constructive for Congress to use the clout it wields over its intransigent and uncooperative friends to help bring about some real and tangible change instead of advocating for a failed policy of "isolation" against Malawi and its people. The U.S. only isolates itself the more when it listens to such irrational and bellicose demands of uninformed parties.
