Profile America - Saturday, November 12th. As National American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month continues, many people across the country may not be aware that the states they live in have names derived from Indian words. In fact, the names of 22 states are derived from American Indian and Alaska Native words, including Alaska, Kentucky, Mississippi, and Ohio, as well as Connecticut, Michigan, and Illinois. Most recent figures show there are five American Indian tribal groups that number more than 100,000. The largest is Cherokee at 730,000, followed by Navajo, Choctaw, Chippewa, and Sioux. Just over 1 million describe themselves as American Indian or Alaska Native, but did not specify a tribe.
