Since October 2005 the Long Beach Water Department has been operating the Leo J. Vander Lans Advanced Water Treatment Facility (AWTF). Built by the Water Replenishment District in 2003, the Leo J. Vander Lans AWTF is a state-of-the-art water treatment facility located in the City of Long Beach. The facility supplies water to protect the Central Basin groundwater basin from seawater contamination and, ultimately, to protect and replenish drinking water for the region.

"Today we recognize the Long Beach Water Department for 100 years of providing a safe and reliable source of water to Long Beach, the 7th largest city in California" said WRD Board President Sergio Calderon. "We applaud them for being a regional leader in water conservation and environmental stewardship and look forward to a bright future of innovation and cooperation between our two agencies," concluded Calderon.

The Water Replenishment District of Southern California is the regional groundwater management agency that protects and preserves the quantity and quality of groundwater for two of the most utilized urban basins in the State of California. The service area is home to over ten percent of California's population residing in 43 cities in southern Los Angeles County. WRD is governed by a publicly elected Board of Directors which includes Willard H. Murray, Jr., Robert Katherman, Lillian Kawasaki, Sergio Calderon, and Albert Robles.
