Marketers of New Gin Prohibit Vodka in Martinis on Anniversary of Prohibition Repeal

NEW YORK, Dec. 3, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- On Monday, December 5th, the anniversary of Repeal Day, Caorunn, the distinctive new gin from Scotland, encourages martini lovers everywhere to say "NO" to vodka by ordering the classic cocktail as it was originally intended.

To commemorate this event, Caorunn is serving up the Caorunn Classic Martini at establishments across the country, reinstating a more original recipe that would be enjoyed in 1933 when the Eighteenth Amendment was nullified and Americans were given back the right to purchase and consume alcohol.

Caorunn Classic Martini

Stir in a mixing glass:

1 part Caorunn

1 part Dry Vermouth

1 dash orange bitters

Garnish with a lemon twist over the top and the stem

The popularity of martinis dates back to the days of Prohibition when it was relatively easy to make illegal gin in a bathtub. Martinis were often mixed to mask the flavor of this "bathtub gin." With the repeal of Prohibition, the drink became an even more popular cocktail with more readily available and better-quality gin options. The tide started to change in the 1970s when vodka began to flow freely into the U.S. A more neutral spirit, it became omnipresent in mixed drinks like Appletinis, Cosmos and other "stylish" cocktails.

According to Eddie Kennelly, spirits consultant and Operations Director of Murphy's Bar and Respite Cocktail Bar in New York City, the time is right for this move. "A lot of people tend to think gins are harsh and overpowering so they choose vodka, a more tasteless spirit. There are options, though, like Caorunn, with a more subtle, floral taste and unique botanicals that actually adds a sophisticated flavor to the cocktail."

About Caorunn

Caorunn is a handcrafted, small batch distilled Scottish gin infused with five Celtic botanicals: rowan berry, heather, bog myrtle, dandelion and coul blush apple. These are blended with six more traditional gin ingredients. Pronounced "ka-roon," the gin is designed work perfectly in martinis and cocktails but smooth enough to enjoy on its own. Caorunn is naturally balanced, dry, clean and crisp and properly served with a slice of red apple. It is handcrafted in small batches, usually 1,000 liters, at Balmenach Distillery in Scotland's Spey Valley. It is marketed by International Beverage.
