OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 12/09/11 -- Today, the Honourable Lisa Raitt, Canada's Labour Minister, congratulated Purolator Courier Ltd. and the Canada Council of Teamsters for successfully reaching a new collective agreement.
"I am very pleased that Purolator and the Canada Council of Teamsters have reached a negotiated agreement without interruption to services," said Minister Raitt. "Strong labour-management relations benefit our country's economic prosperity and the economic security of Canadians."
The Canada Council of Teamsters represents approximately 9 000 delivery and line haul drivers and package handlers at Purolator. The previous collective agreement was set to expire on December 31, 2011. The parties reached an agreement with the assistance of a conciliation officer from the Labour Program's Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service.
The Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service provides dispute resolution and dispute prevention assistance to trade unions and employers under the jurisdiction of the Canada Labour Code. Mediation aims to achieve a collective agreement and avoid a work stoppage.
