(The Styrene Information and Research Center (SIRC) issued the following statement today on behalf of the U.S. styrene industry. This statement may be attributed in whole or in part to SIRC Executive Director Jack Snyder)
"The U.S. styrene industry is pleased funding has been proposed for a scientific, peer review by the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) of styrene's listing in the National Toxicology Program's 12thReport on Carcinogens. Congress included the NAS review of styrene in its Congressional Conference Report on Appropriations for 2012.
The industry has long desired an NAS review of styrene because NAS is known for its thorough, sound and impartial evaluations. Recent assessments of styrene have been scrutinized and questioned as to their inclusiveness, transparency, and accuracy. A review by NAS, considered the ultimate federal authority on science, will aid in clarifying any concerns related to the safety of styrene."
