2,500-Pound, 10-Foot Ice Sculpture to be Carved at Penn's Landing

WHAT:

To celebrate the holiday season, four ice artists will create a giant 2,500-pound, 10-foot-long penguin ice sculpture that will be on display at Penn's Landing for the festive week after Christmas and into the new year. The ice-sculpting artists will use chainsaws, handsaws, chisels, die grinders, irons and other power tools to carve the penguins from 16 blocks of ice each weighing approximately 300 pounds. The enormous ice masterpiece will draw visitors to Penn's Landing through January 3, weather permitting.

WHO:

The sculpture is made possible by:

WHEN:

Tuesday, December 27, 2011

Sculpting takes place from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m.

WHERE:

FUN FACTS:

The ice used for ice sculptures is created using the same methods from the early
20th century. Metal cans are filled with water and placed in a pool of brine, which is chilled to 15 F. It can take up to four days to completely freeze the water in the cans.

Sculpting is done in two phases: three to four hours of advance prep work in a warehouse and then another three hours on site for placement and final work.
