Governor Corbett, Senate Majority Leader Pileggi Address Fiscal Situation in Chester Upland School District

HARRISBURG, Pa., Jan. 20, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ --Governor Tom Corbett and Senate Majority Leader Dominic Pileggi today issued the following joint statement regarding the ongoing fiscal crisis in Chester Upland School District:

"As we develop a comprehensive solution to address the dire financial situation in Chester Upland School District, our focus is first and foremost on the children attending school in the district.

"We understand the stress that this situation is putting on them and their families, and we want to assure them that they will be able to finish the school year at Chester Upland.

"It is also clear, however, that significant changes to the district's operations will be necessary to address Chester Upland's financial condition. The present structure is simply unsustainable. The state is developing a responsible, long-term plan to address the fiscal issues which have plagued the district for many years, and even decades.'

Corbett added that he has scheduled a meeting for Jan. 23 to discuss the situation with lawmakers representing Delaware County.

Sen. Pileggi (R-Chester/Delaware) has scheduled an open forum for parents in the school district on Friday, Jan. 27, from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. in the Chester Upland administration building.

Also on Friday, Jan. 27, the House Appropriations Committee, chaired by Rep. William Adolph (R-Delaware), will hold a public hearing on the district's fiscal issues at 10 a.m. on the campus of Widener University in Chester.
