MANCHESTER, NH -- (Marketwire) -- 01/24/12 -- Saturday evening, January 14th, at the Verizon Wireless Arena, marked the eleventh annual meeting of the UNH and Dartmouth men's hockey teams, vying for the RiverStone Cup. Notwithstanding time-slot competition from the Pats-Broncos playoff game, more than 5,300 fired-up fans turned out for this now-traditional battle for local bragging rights as the best men's college hockey team in New Hampshire. This time around, UNH took the honors with a 4-1 triumph over their Division I rivals. The Wildcat victory was highlighted by the spectacular performance of senior forward Stevie Moses, who accounted personally for all four of UNH's goals! Predictably, Moses was named most valuable player, which additionally earned a $500 RiverStone contribution to the UNH Athletic Program.
This event actually features a tradition within a tradition since a symbolic first puck is always dropped by a deserving member of the armed services from New Hampshire. This year's hero is Sergeant First Class Mark Bright of the 197th Fires Brigade, NH National Guard. Sergeant Bright is highly decorated, having received numerous awards and honors, including the Bronze Star for Valor. The fans in attendance at the game acknowledged the Sergeant's distinguished service with a hearty round of cheers and a standing ovation. As an added gesture of appreciation, RiverStone presented a donation of $1,000 to "Veterans Count" to help veterans and their families.
The big payoff of the event came between periods when Bob Sampson, RiverStone VP of Claims, presented a check for $31,759 to Nancy Mellitt, Annual Campaign Manager for the NH Food Bank. The check represented proceeds from RiverStone's employees with a match from RiverStone. Coincidentally, January each year happens to be the Food Bank's "Tuna Month," during which donors are encouraged to donate canned and bagged tuna fish for distribution to hungry men, women and children throughout the state. In this context, the RiverStone check is almost equivalent to 20,000 pounds of tuna!
