WASHINGTON, Jan.31, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ --In the face of overwhelming grassroots criticism on social media, Sen. Orrin Hatch's election campaign is making a desperate attempt to sway online opinion toward the six-term incumbent, which a leaked email to supporters shows.
The email blames online criticism of Hatch on FreedomWorks for America and grassroots activists, painting those who want a real conservative representing Utah as "a determined and organized minority" that spreads "false accusations, misinformation and even outright lies about Senator Orrin Hatch."
"Whether we're on the ground with our activists in Utah or spreading the word online, our message has always been simple: look at Senator Hatch's record," commented FreedomWorks for America National Political Director Russ Walker. "The Hatch record shows a 35-year history of disavowing conservative principles and becoming a willful partner in the rise of Big Government."
The Hatch campaign email urges supporters to "comment on threads and articles you see online about Senator Hatch...voice your support...retweet or reply to tweets from us or about the Senator."
The email closes with the same tired campaign talking point: "It's critical that Senator Hatch remain in Washington to continue his work on the Balanced Budget Amendment, challenging ObamaCare and stand up for conservative values."
"Utahns are tired of hearing Hatch talk about a Balanced Budget Amendment when he's voted to increase the debt ceiling 16 times and added $7.5 trillion to our national debt," added Walker.
"Utahns are tired of hearing Hatch talk about fighting ObamaCare when it was Hatch's very own health care mandate, SCHIP, that opened the floodgates and led to President Obama's law."
Recently a Lincoln Day straw poll held in Box Elder County affirmed that a majority of voters, nearly 60 percent, want a new conservative Republican to replace Senator Hatch. Winning the straw poll was FreedomWorks Legislative Entrepreneur of the Year Dan Liljenquist. Hatch came in second, and Chris Herrod came in third. Even more telling of Hatch's vulnerability, Senator Bob Bennett narrowly defeated Mike Lee in the same pivotal straw poll held in 2010, but Lee would eventually go on to win Bennett's seat.
"Hatch is no longer the man Utahns sent to Washington in 1976," noted Walker. "He's out of touch. This campaign email further demonstrates just how arrogantly Hatch will try to spin the reality that a majority of Utahns just want him to retire."
