SATURDAY, MARCH 3: SUFFRAGE PARADE VIOLENCE
Profile America - Saturday, March 3rd. This is Women's History Month - noting the accomplishments and courage of American women throughout the history of the U.S. A key milestone for women in the 20th century was winning the right to vote. One of the worst moments in that effort occurred on this date in 1913, the day before President Wilson's inauguration, when a suffragette parade of 5,000 women in Washington, D.C., turned into a near riot. Spectators jeered and shoved the marchers, and soldiers from nearby Fort Myer were called in to restore order. In 1920, the 19th Amendment to the Constitution guaranteed women the right to vote. In recent presidential and off-year elections, over 4 percent more women have voted than men. You can find these and more facts about America from the U.S. Census Bureau, online at www.census.gov.
