Profile America - Sunday, March 4th. The city of Chicago was officially incorporated 175 years ago today, in 1837, when the Illinois legislature passed a city charter into law. The city's first mayor was William Ogden. Chicago fast became a powerhouse in Midwest America, coming to widespread attention as the stockyard and meatpacking center of the country, made famous as the "Hog Butcher to the World," by poet Carl Sandburg. Today, it is a major financial and commodity trading hub. When Chicago first became a city, its population numbered 4,170. Today, metropolitan Chicago is home to nearly 9.5 million people.
