EDMONTON, ALBERTA -- (Marketwire) -- 03/16/12 -- The new $10 million Edmonton Filmed Entertainment Fund introduced today will create economic prosperity by bringing new film and TV productions to Edmonton.
A partnership between Edmonton Economic Development Corporation (EEDC) and Kilburn Media, the fund - which can accommodate multiple projects in a year - will benefit the regional economy through increased year-round work for film crews. Numbers vary from one production to another; a typical production can create around 120 temporary jobs for Edmonton-based crews.
Benefits also cover such critical support areas as set design and construction, accommodation, catering, technical services, transportation, and costuming.
EEDC manages Edmonton's portion of the fund, which originated from the City of Edmonton and was approved by City Council in 2011. EEDC's profits generated from its investment will be rolled back into the fund, sustaining the fund's long-term viability.
After the first year of demonstrated success, the fund may look to grow through additional investors, to be matched by Kilburn Media.
In addition, the fund will raise awareness of Edmonton, adds to the city's quality of life and creativity, and enhance the city's reputation as an industry-friendly filming destination - consistent with the City of Edmonton's 2009-18 strategic plan that encourages the diversification of Edmonton's economy.
Edmonton Economic Development Corporation (EEDC) provides leadership in economic development, markets Edmonton as a must-see destination, manages the Shaw Conference Centre and Edmonton Research Park, and acts as a stakeholder in TEC Edmonton, a joint venture with the University of Alberta.
