National Summit Draws White House, Federal and Local Leaders to Examine Youth Violence Prevention

WASHINGTON, April 1, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- At the National Summit on Preventing Youth Violence, to be held on April 2-3 in Washington, D.C., mayors, police chiefs, school officials and youth, among other local representatives, will report on their efforts to prevent youth violence in connection with the Obama Administration's National Forum on Youth Violence Prevention. Officials from Boston, Chicago, Detroit, Memphis, Tenn., Salinas, Calif. and San Jose, Calif. will participate in interactive dialogues on prevention, intervention, enforcement and reentry highlighting their city's efforts to prevent youth violence.

Attorney General Eric Holder, along with Department of Education Secretary Arne Duncan, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, Housing and Urban Development Secretary Shaun Donovan, Director R. Gil Kerlikowske of the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP), White House Senior Advisor Valerie Jarrett, Acting Assistant Attorney General for the Office of Justice Programs Mary Lou Leary, Congressman Robert C. Scott (D-VA) and Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, will deliver remarks. Other summit speakers will include Grammy-nominated hip hop artist Lecrae Moore, Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter, President and CEO of Casey Family Programs Dr. William Bell, faith and business leaders and federal officials. Philadelphia Mayor and President-Elect of the U.S. Conference of Mayors Michael Nutter and President and CEO of Casey Family Programs Dr. William C. Bell, will participate in a panel on comprehensive efforts that create communities of hope for youth.

3:45 p.m.

Department of Health and Human Services Commissioner Bryan Samuels will lead a discussion on the role of supportive relationships in building resilience in the lives of youth.



4:05 p.m.

Youth from Chicago, Detroit, Memphis and San Jose will share their stories in a panel discussion of youth hope and resilience.



5:20 p.m.

Grammy-nominated Christian hip hop artist Lecrae Moore will deliver remarks and perform.

Los Angeles Deputy Mayor Guillermo Cespedes and representatives from Target, the Boston Foundation, and Grantmakers for Children, Youth and Families will participate on a panel on developing and sustaining effective private sector partnerships.

Memphis, Tenn. First Baptist Church Pastor Keith Norman will moderate a panel on how families, houses of worship and community partners can work together to prevent youth violence.

Center Director Dr. Jeffrey Butts will discuss the Implementation Assessment of the efforts of the six cities involved in the Forum and highlight some success and challenges facing sites.

Department of Labor officials and a Jobs Corps Center graduate will discuss training opportunities and employment strategies for youth nationwide, including best practices to facilitate the reentry of formerly incarcerated young adults.



4:00 p.m.

Youth representatives from the Forum cities will report on the next steps being taken to prevent youth violence in their communities.
