Decorated Brigadier General William H. Weir Joins the Law Firm of SmithAmundsen

CHICAGO, April 30, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Brigadier General William H. Weir has joined SmithAmundsen's Insurance Practice Group as a partner. Mr. Weir has more than 35 years of experience as an attorney, as a business law instructor and as a judge in the 16th Judicial Circuit. Additionally, he is a decorated veteran who served in the United States Marine Corps and the US Army for nearly 35 years.

Weir spent more than 35 years in the private sector as an attorney and a teacher of business law at Elgin Community College in Elgin, Ill. From 2003-2009, he served the people of DeKalb, Kane and Kendall counties as a Judge in the 16th Judicial Circuit, presiding over civil jury trials, felony jury trials, drug court and divorce court. Prior to joining SmithAmundsen, he was a partner and trial lawyer with a law firm in the Western suburbs of Chicago. Additionally, Weir was also recently appointed General Counsel of the National Veterans Museum to be built in Hoffman Estates, Ill.

Weir received his officer's commission in the U.S. Marine Corps. He commanded units in the 1st Marine Division in the Republic of Vietnam participating in four major counter offensives against North Vietnamese Army Forces. He commanded Company, Battalion, Brigade and Division units in the U.S. Army. Weir has served in areas of the globe such as Vietnam, Cuba, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Iraq, Germany, United Kingdom, Jamaica, Honduras, Panama, Japan, Hawaii, Quantico, Camp Lejeune and the Pentagon. On advice and consent of the U.S. Senate, he was nominated to the rank of Brigadier General by the President of the United States. His honors and awards include two Legion of Merits from the President of the United States, a Meritorious Service Medal, a Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry, a Humanitarian Service Medal, a Civil Action Medal and a Jungle Expert among numerous others. Throughout his career, Weir received 4 TOP SECRET security clearances from the Department of Defense. He retired, with full honors, from the United States Military in 2008.

Weir earned his law degree from The John Marshall Law School in Chicago. He is also a graduate of the prestigious U.S. Army War College, in Carlisle Barracks, Penn. and of the Illinois Judicial College. He completed course work and lectured at the John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University, and the Harvard University War College.

Weir begins his position with SmithAmundsen immediately and will work from the firm's St. Charles, IL office.
