ADL Expresses Deep Disappointment Over Virginia Legislature's Rejection Of A Judicial Nominee Because Of His Sexual Orientation

WASHINGTON, May 16, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) expressed deep disappointment over action by the Virginia House of Delegates to reject a nominee for the General District Court because of his sexual orientation. The nominee, Tracy Thorne-Begland, was apparently rejected for no other reason than who he is and what he fought for. Mr. Thorne-Begland had disclosed his sexual orientation over 20 years ago while he served as a naval officer.

According to The Washington Post, during the course of the Virginia General Assembly's voting process, one Delegate Robert G. Marshall, while remarking that same-sex marriage is not legal in Virginia stated: "[Thorne-Begland] holds himself out as being married . . . [his] life is a contradiction to the requirement of submission to the constitution."

"ADL firmly believes that the selection of individuals for judicial appointments, as in all employment decisions, should be based on merit, performance and ability - and never on the basis of an individual's sexual orientation. Bias has no place in the selection process for judicial nominees, such as Mr. Thorne-Begland," said David C. Friedman, the Anti-Defamation League's D.C. Regional Director. "No one should be denied the opportunity to be considered for a job or court appointment solely because of his or her sexual orientation."

The Anti-Defamation League, founded in 1913, is the world's leading organization fighting anti-Semitism through programs and services that counteract hatred, prejudice and bigotry.

As a 501c3 non-profit corporation, ADL takes no position on behalf of or in opposition to any candidate for office.
