SASKATOON, SASKATCHEWAN -- (Marketwire) -- 06/02/12 -- Today, the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, met with municipal leaders attending the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) conference to highlight the new Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund (CIIF) announced in Economic Action Plan 2012.
The Harper Government is building on recent actions to modernize Canada's public infrastructure by committing $150 million over two years for CIIF to support repairs and improvements to existing community facilities.
"Our Government's first priority is creating jobs, growth and long-term prosperity," said Minister Yelich. "Modernizing Canada's public infrastructure will stimulate economic activity and leave a lasting legacy for future generations."
Community-based facilities contribute to the quality of life in small communities and large urban centres throughout Canada. CIIF aims to provide funding for improvements to these facilities, while supporting job creation in communities across the country.
Western Economic Diversification Canada, along with the other Regional Development Agencies are finalizing program details and will work to get funds to communities as quickly as possible.
Western Economic Diversification Canada works to create jobs and economic growth for Western Canada. By promoting new economic opportunities, WD is securing a more diverse and prosperous future for the West while advancing western interests at the national level.
