ST. PAUL, Minn., June 6, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --A campaign announced in Minnesota and California on January 1 of this year has been gaining a lot of attention, with animal shelters, rescue groups and government agencies taking a pledge to not kill healthy homeless animals, or animals with treatable medical or behavioral issues. The effort is shaping up to make June 11, 2012 the safest day for pets in history. Nearly 700 organizations have already taken the pledge.
Organized and coordinated by Animal Ark of Minnesota and the No Kill Advocacy Center in California, the campaign is called called Just One Day. It will feature adoption events and other celebrations all across the nation, including a few in the Twin Cities Metro area. Animal Ark will stay open until 7:30 to help more animals find homes that day. They will also host the grand openingof a new adoption center in St. Paul.
"The new adoption center in St. Paul will not only help us adopt more animals on June 11," said Mike Fry, executive director at Animal Ark, "it will help increase adoptions each day thereafter."
The Minnesota-based Animal Wise Radioprogram will also be broadcasting LIVE from Noon till 5 PM, covering national events of the day.
Organizations participating, they receive a free media kit shelters can use to help ensure they are emptier at the end of the day than when it started. On June 11, "euthanasia" technicians all over the USA will put down their syringes. Instead, they will pick up cameras and cell phones. Rather than injecting savable animals with fatal doses of sodium pentobarbital, they will take pictures of them. They will post them on the Internet, on Facebook and Twitter. They will have extended hours, and host special events, all in an effort to engage 300 million Americans. The result will be unprecedented life-saving.
Regardless of whether all shelters in the USA sign on, June 11 will be the safest day for shelter animals in the history of our the nation.
Winograd added, "And if the shelters are emptier than when they started the day on June 11, then it should be easier to make June 12 Just Another Day."
