NASA Astronaut To Deliver Commencement Address At Alma Mater

HOUSTON, June 6, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- NASA astronaut Scott D. Tingle will deliver the commencement address at Blue Hills Regional Technical School at 6 p.m. EDT June 12. The graduation ceremony will take place outside, on the school's campus, at 800 Randolph St., in Canton, Mass. In the event of inclement weather, the ceremony will be held at 6 p.m. the following day, June 13.

Blue Hills Regional Technical School is a four-year public high school that provides technical training for students. The school's curriculum emphasizes the integration of cutting-edge technical programs and challenging academic courses.

Tingle, a U.S. Navy commander and decorated pilot, is a 1983 graduate of Blue Hills Regional Technical School. He was selected in 2009 as one of 14 members of the 20th NASA astronaut class.He recently graduated from Astronaut Candidate Training which included scientific and technical briefings, intensive instruction in International Space Station systems, spacewalking, robotics, physiological training, T-38 flight training and water and wilderness survival training.

Before his career at NASA, Tingle earned a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering from Southeastern Massachusetts University (now the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth), graduating magna cum laudein 1987.He earned a Master of Science in mechanical engineering with a specialty in fluid mechanics and propulsion from Purdue University in 1988.

Following graduate school, Tingle was commissioned as a naval officer in 1991 and earned his Wings of Gold as a naval aviator in 1993.He has accumulated more than 3,500 flight hours in 48types of aircraft, 700 carrier arrestments and 54 combat missions in Iraq and Afghanistan.
